BC Parks has closed parts of Meziadin Lake Provincial Park’s campground due to increased grizzly bear activity in the area. The closure, which affects soft-sided tent camping, was implemented after staff began aversive conditioning methods to discourage unwanted bear behavior. These efforts, started on May 20th, aim to prevent further interactions between bears and park visitors.
The BC Conservation Officer Service is also investigating reports of illegal bear feeding along Highway 37 near the park. Feeding bears, either directly or indirectly, creates serious public safety risks by conditioning the animals to human food and presence. Under the Wildlife Act, it is an offence to feed dangerous wildlife, and those caught doing so can face fines of up to $100,000 or imprisonment.
BC Parks reminds the public to report any wildlife feeding incidents to the Report All Poachers and Polluters (RAPP) hotline at 1-877-952-7277. Updates on the status of Meziadin Lake Provincial Park can be found on the BC Parks website. For media inquiries, contact envmedia@gov.bc.ca.
