Lax Kw’alaams Mayor Garry Reece and hereditary leaders of the Allied Ts’msyen Tribes have signed a Governance Accord, creating a unified governance model for the territory. This agreement formalizes shared decision-making between hereditary and elected leaders to protect the integrity of Lax Kw’alaams’ land. Mayor Reece emphasized that decisions about the territory will now be made together with hereditary leaders, reflecting a united approach.
Tomorrow, April 9, Lax Kw’alaams members will vote on the proposed Da’ax Kw’alaams Man-Ayaawx Constitution. The constitution, shaped by three years of community consultation, is a crucial step toward self-governance, allowing the community to manage its own laws and territory, free from the Indian Act.
Voting will be available online and in-person, with at least 60% approval needed for the constitution to pass.
