The Lax Kw’alaams First Nation will hold a referendum on April 9, 2025, to vote on the proposed Da’ax Kw’alaams Man-Ayaawx Constitution, a significant step toward self-governance. The constitution aims to assert the rights of the community, moving away from the Indian Act, which has historically restricted Indigenous governance. If at least 60% of voters approve, the document will empower the community to manage its laws, territory, and resources while ensuring accountability for leadership.
Online registration for voting is open until April 3, with in-person voting on April 9 in Lax Kw’alaams and Prince Rupert. The constitution is designed to strengthen local governance, promote community justice, and improve quality of life, without affecting taxation or provincial services. This referendum follows the recent approval of a similar constitution by the Heiltsuk Nation. For more information, visit the Lax Kw’alaams website.
