NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh unveiled a new plan aimed at helping first-time homebuyers by unlocking the financial power of the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). The plan would offer low-interest, public-backed mortgages to working and middle-class families, making homeownership more affordable and accessible.
Singh criticized current government policies, which he claims have prioritized big developers and investors over families. By expanding CMHC’s mandate, Singh aims to ensure it serves the people it was originally meant to help. The low-interest mortgages would directly reduce monthly costs and save families thousands of dollars over the life of their mortgage.
In addition to supporting homebuyers, Singh outlined other affordability measures, including capping food prices, removing the GST from essentials, and doubling the Canada Disability Benefit. He emphasized that New Democrats are committed to making housing and other necessities affordable for all Canadians, not just the wealthy.
