BC RCMP Adopts Eagle Feather Protocol in Spirit of Reconciliation

The BC RCMP has officially adopted the Eagle Feather Protocol, joining seven other RCMP divisions in recognizing the importance of the eagle feather in Indigenous culture. In alignment with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s calls to action, this initiative aims to create a more inclusive and relevant justice system for Indigenous people.
Introduced in Nova Scotia, the protocol allows victims, witnesses, suspects, and RCMP officers to swear legal oaths using an eagle feather, which holds sacred significance for many Indigenous peoples across North America. Before being distributed to RCMP detachments, the feathers undergo a smudging ceremony led by an Elder to cleanse them.
