Terrace is among 17 communities selected to take part in a provincial pilot program aimed at modernizing the housing development process.
Over the next few months, the province will work with the communities to develop a fully digital building permit tool to speed up housing starts.
Most jurisdictions in BC currently rely on a paper-based application process for new housing developments, leading to delays in approvals.
Once completed, the new tool will allow developers to submit permits digitally, and will automatically review them for building code compliance.
It will be rolled out to the 17 pilot communities next March for review, afterwhich it will be expanded to include additional communities.
In addition, the province is creating a digital advisory council which will provide strategic advice for improving permitting and construction.
