Lax Kw’alaams Band to Hold Ground Breaking Ceremony for 70-Unit Housing Development Next Week

A ground breaking ceremony is being held by the Lax Kw’alaams Band next week as they kickstart work on a new 70 unit housing development.

Located at 830 11th Avenue in Prince Rupert, the project will be overseen by the Band’s wholly owned WAAP Housing Society.

Originally proposed by the Society in 2020, the six-storey housing development received final approval from City Council the following year.

Residents were initially torn on the project, but the City lauded the developer’s efforts to mitigate the issues brought up by the public.

With work set to get underway, the Band is inviting all to a ceremony next Thursday as they get set to break ground on the project.

It will be held at the project site between noon and 2:00, with additional ferry sailings that day to help Band members get to the site.
