Tahltan Nation members are being reminded of a delay to the Food, Social, and Ceremonial Fishery opening date.
Initially scheduled to open on July 1st, the date was delayed until the 12th, following changes observed to sockeye run timing.
That delay is another effort to conserve struggling Chinook King Salmon populations in the Stikine by preventing their interception.
According to the Tahltan Central Government, the first two weeks of food fishing see the extensive interception of Chinook in migration.
Their data reveals that the numbers of Sockeye in their food fishery do not begin to grow until June 12th to the 15th.
As of July 5th, the TCG had recorded a count of 3 large and 3 non-large Chinook through their monitoring in the Stikine.
