A plan to honour Indigenous teachers which began as a school project has made it all the way to the House of Commons.
Tabled today by NDP MP Heather McPherson, Bill C-338 seeks to establish a National Indigenous Teachers Day.
But the concept for the Bill was initially submitted by Edmonton high school student Theodore Anton as part of the Create Your Canada contest.
If passed, the Bill would establish February 22nd as a day to acknowledge the work of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit educators across Canada.
It would also stand as a day to acknowledge and support the on-going work to reform the colonial education system to be more culturally inclusive.
February 22nd was selected for being the birthday of renowned Indigenous educator Cecil King, who passed away last year.
