To help low income women and gender-diverse people, the province has announced $1 million to the Rise Women’s Legal Centre.
Offering both in person and virtual services for protection orders, divorce or separation, parenting arrangements, and spousal support, more than 1,700 people access the free service each year.
In particular, the funding will support free legal services for women and gender diverse people and assist counsel in complex cases.
It will also support the centre’s recommendations outlined in their Creating Safety in BC Courtrooms report.
Those recommendations include things like creating safe rooms for people to provide space away from the opposing party during legal proceedings and improving in court experiences.
This comes as an effort to provide supports for victims of intimate partner violence and increase access to family justice for everyone.
