Work to rehabilitate a previously unwanted site has earned the City of Prince Rupert and their partners national recognition.
Prince Rupert’s Watson Island Project took home the award for Best Overall Project at the National Brownfield Awards last night.
Affectionately known as “Brownies”, the awards recognize rehabilitation projects on formerly contaminated and under-utilized land.
Due largely to the abandoned pulp mill, the Watson Island site was once a major economic and environmental liability to the City.
But, alongside McElhanney and other partners, the City’s remediation and rehabilitation work site has transformed it into an attractive site for development and opportunity.
Pembina’s propane facility became the first project to begin operations at the site last year.
Thanks to an innovative proponent driven process at the site, the facility will now begin generating lease revenue to offset major capital costs for the City.
In addition, the City has also been able to recycle 95 percent of pulping chemicals and materials left on site.
