With much of BC still under drought conditions, the First Nations Leadership Council is urging the province and Ottawa to prioritize watershed management.
They are calling on both parties to invest in projects which restore and protect watersheds, and to immediately establish a Watershed Security Fund.
Their demands come after a video recorded by researcher Sarah Mund made the rounds, depicting hundreds of dead salmon on Heiltsuk territory, near the Neekas Creek.
Experts blamed that discovery on the on-going dry and warm conditions experienced across much of the province.
Currently, 5 of BC’s major water basins are covered under Level 4 drought statements, including the Fort Nelson basin in the north.
