Members of the First Nations Climate Initiative are calling on the Federal and Provincial governments to adopt their climate action plan.
Led by the Haisla, Metlakatla, and Nisga’a Nations, their plan presents 7 measures to help transition to a low-carbon economy, while alleviating poverty in First Nations communities.
Among them is a proposal to expand the 500 KV Northwest Transmission Grid to provide increased capacity for renewable energy projects.
They also suggest inviting affected First Nations to partner in that expansion, as part of another measure calling for programs to allow First Nations to become major equity partners.
That would be assisted by an expedited 12-month approval process for First Nations climate projects, and incentives for low-carbon and new energy system projects and demonstrations.
But it also calls for investments in expanding the carbon market, including using carbon offsets and trading, and to position Canada as the cleanest natural gas producer in the world.
They say that natural gas can be a net-zero energy source, if handled properly, and is a key in the transition to hydrogen.
