Scanning to uncover unmarked graves at the former site of the residential school Alberni Indian Residential School has officially begun.
Ground penetrating radar will be used to probe the site, with work conducted by the Tseshaht First Nation with the help of GeoScan.
Preparation for the scan began back in February, but probing work wasn’t able to begin until the soil in the area was in the right condition.
Part one of the search began today and will continue over the next two weeks.
Tseshaht Nation members who went to the school are being urged to share their experiences, with support available, in order to aid the search.
One million dollars in government funding is being provided to the Nation over the next two years to continue the work.
