First Nations will have more control over their children’s education, with the establishment of the new First Nations Education Authority.
Established on July 1st, the Authority marks aims to help First Nations develop the capacity to provide education on their territory.
Today saw the first four Nations in BC join the authority, after the Cowichan Tribes, and Lil’wat, ʔaq’am and Seabird Island Nations signed education jurisdiction agreements.
Through the agreements, the Nations have gained recognized law-making authority over K-12 education systems on their land.
That means they will have say over teacher and school certification, graduation requirements, curriculum, and course approvals.
A board of directors will be established, made up of two directors appointed by each participating Nation, to support them in developing their systems.
