Back on Monday, the Doig River and Blueberry River First Nations settled land debts that had been around since Treaty 8 was originally signed.
They did this by having their chiefs and councils sign a historic treaty land entitlement agreement that will result in over 5,000 hectares of land being returned to the nations.
The process for the nation’s attempt to get their land back started back in 1999 when the Doig River nation submitted a claim to the federal government to settle outstanding land owed through Treaty 8.
It took until 2004 for the government to officially accept the claim and for negotiations to resolve the land issues to start.
