A new Marine Protected Area has been formally established on Kitasoo Xai’Xais (Shy-Shy) territory near Loredo Sound.
Covering the Gitdisdzu Lugyeks, also known as Kitasu Bay, the declaration spans 33.5 square kms of ocean waters.
Under the declaration, the area will be monitored and cared for by the Kitasoo Xai’Xais Guardian Watchmen.
Stewardship will be guided by a science-based, Indigenous-led Conservation Management Plan, focused on ecological integrity, and protection of wildlife, ecosystems, cultural sites, and harvesting and hunting areas.
Kitasu Bay is home to a wide array of sea life, including whales, salmon, cod, halibut, seabirds, kelp forests, and more.
