A popular park in Quesnel has been renamed as part of an effort to restore Lhtako Dene and Southern Carrier culture along the City’s riverfront.
Prior to European colonization, the riverfront had served as the main settlement for the Lhtako Dene, and continues to be a site of great cultural importance.
Located near the confluence of the Quesnel and Fraser Rivers, and Baker Creek, Ceal Tingley Park falls well within that range.
In honour of National Indigenous Peoples Day, the City held a ceremony yesterday to officially change the park’s name to Lhtako Dene Park.
A new park sign, positioned between two of the Nation’s flags, will welcome visitors of the park to Lhtako Dene territory, along with a dipnet and salmon sculpture.
