The Premier and several other BC ministers recently traveled to Tahltan territory.
John Horgan, Nathan Cullen, the municipal affairs minister and Bruce Ralston the minister responsible for mines, stopped in Dease Lake, Telegraph Creek and Iskut. It was the first time in over 30 years that a sitting premier traveled to the territory.
The trio visited schools in Dease Lake and Iskut and spoke both with students about their aspirations for the future and with local leaders and industry representatives about the work being done to market resources in a sustainable manner.
A week before the visit, the government and the First Nation took an historic step by signing an agreement that concerns decision making under the declaration on the rights of Indigenous Persons act, which recognizes the inherent rights of the Tahltan in making decisions on their territory and to serve as stewards as they have for thousands of years.
Horgan called it reconciliation in action.
