A courtroom battle between two men representing the Allied Tribes of Lax Kw’alaams and Metlakatla, and the Nisga’a Nation, represented by the Province, has come to it’s conclusion.
Garry Reece and Harold Leighton, who represent the Allied Tribes, have had the court rule in their favor regarding an injunction over a territorial dispute on the Nasoga Lands.
The Nasoga Lands are a parcel of land that is located close to the Nass River and stretches for 22,000 hectares.
The Nisga’a Nation was looking to buy the set of land back in 2016 but the Allied Tribes, who themselves represent the nine historic tribes of the Coast Ts’msyen, believed that they had their own claim to the land, and looked to get their aboriginal title declared for the land.
Since the courts ruled in favor of the Coast Ts’msyen, the Nisga’a Nation will not be able to buy the Nasoga Lands for the next 18 months thanks to an injunction.
All the parties involved will be able to negotiate in that time frame in order to work out an extension that works for all sides.
