Newly proposed legislation aims to give Indigenous voices more say over Canada’s historic sites.
If passed, the legislation will create three new spots on the Historic Sites and Monuments Board for First Nations, Métis, and Inuit representatives.
It will also improve the integration of Indigenous history, heritage values and memory practices, and provide a framework for transparent decision-making.
Through these changes, the legislation aims to give Indigenous people more say over which sites, people, and events are considered to be of national historic significance.
On top of that, it will also add legal protections to historic sites, and provide an official framework for identifying, evaluating, and designating historic sites.
