A new agreement made between the Tahltan Central Government and BC, marks the first of its kind under the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act.
Through the consent-based agreement, the pair will work to change BC’s traditional approach to permitting, placing Tahltan values and rights at the forefront.
It outlines a new decision-making process, which will provide clarity and support for the Eskay Creek Mine Revitalization Project.
Using the agreement as a framework, the government’s intend to create a model for sustainable mining and environmental practices and standards.
Premier John Horgan says the agreement is a historic step toward shifting BC’s legal decision-making framework to respect First Nations jurisdiction and recognize their inherent rights.
