Today marks the one year anniversary of the release of Canada’s Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, LGBTQ+, and Two Spirit Action Plan.
It has also been exactly three years since the release of a National Inquiry on the same issues was released, brining forward 231 Calls to Action.
But, in the years since, little has been done to address those Calls, or any of their underlying causes.
While over $2 billion in funding was announced in Budget 2021, the First Nations Leadership Council says that has yet to translate to change on the ground.
Budget 2022 included broad commitments to ending gender-based violence, but made no mention of specific funding to address the disproportionate violence against Indigenous women and girls.
The National Family and Survivors Circle, who contributed to the Action Plan, say they are frustrated by the lack of accountability since.
They say critical early recommendations, such as creating an oversight body and an Indigenous Human Rights Tribunal, have gone unfulfilled.
The Federal NDP also took aim at the Prime Minister’s assertion that more work needs to be done, while fully acting on zero recommendations.
All are calling for the government to immediately address the issues, and enact the Plan they committed to.
