Both Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Governor General Mary Simon attended an all day memorial yesterday in Kamloops for the anniversary of the discovery of unmarked graves at the former Kamloops Residential School site.
Trudeau gave a speech saying that he understood the grief and anger that people were feeling about the discovery of the graves while dealing with some angry chants.
Governor General Simon let a crowd of residential school survivors and their family members know that finding these unmarked graves of children was a confirmation of First Nations experiences.
Simon also said during the memorial that survivors and their relatives already knew about the atrocities, the deaths, the loss and the silence for a long time.
Simon, the first Indigenous Governor General, stated that it shouldn’t have taken this long for others in Canada to know exactly what happened at those schools.
However, she also mentioned that that simply knowing has transformed the Kamloops community, with people travelling to pay their respects, say they’re sorry and to show support.
