A bill was recently put forward in BC legislature by Liberal MLA Doug Clovechok, and it proposes that Indigenous names should be allowed to be printed on government documents like birth certificates with the proper accents and symbols.
Clovechok, who represents the Columbia River-Revelstoke riding, put this bill forward back on Thursday in order to make a change that a whole lot of people have been wanting to see.
As of now, every government system within the province is not allowed to use diacritic marks, which provides the important parts of most Indigenous names.
In addition to this bill, the BC Ministry of Citizen Services sent out a statement saying that they were working on adopting fonts that are more inclusive and would allow for Indigenous languages to be used on items such as identification documents.
