Canada’s First Indigenous Governor General, the Right Honorable Mary Simon received a welcoming from Premier John Horgan, as she began her 1st official visit to BC today.
Premier Horgan was joined by BC’s Lieutenant Governor Janet Austin, the Esquimalt Nation’s Chief Robert Thomas and the Songhees Nation’s Chief Ronald Sam as they all greeted Simon just outside the Parliament Buildings.
Simon’s arrival was also commemorated by a performance from Songhees Nation traditional dancers as well as a 21-gun salute from BC’s 5th Field Artillery Regiment.
During her visit, the Governor General is expected to take part in several different events.
The first of which was done earlier today, as she had a meeting with Horgan and First Nations leaders before going on a tour of the Orange Shirt display commemorating everyone affected negatively by the Residential School system.
