Update: Both the Liberals and the Conservatives have voted against a motion suggested by the NDP yesterday.
NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh put forward this Parliamentary Motion which would both lower gas prices, and end fossil fuel subsidies.
With gas prices surpassing $2 a litre across most of the country yesterday, Singh urged the Liberals to help those struggling with the cost of living.
Singh’s plan called for the Government to cancel all fossil fuel subsidies by the end of the year, including the Carbon Capture Tax Credit.
That money would then be reinvested in renewable energy, and initiatives to help combat the rising cost of living.
His plan would’ve seen the GST credit doubled, and the Canada Child Benefit increased by $500 for all recipients.
That would provide middle and low-income families with between $500 and $1,000, benefiting at least 40 percent of residents.
However, this motion was only supported by the Bloc Québécois.
Prime Minister Trudeau believes that the national child care agreement is going to save families thousands this year.
