A group of concerned residents have blocked off a bank in Winnipeg, in a show of solidarity with Wet’suwet’en land defenders.
Over the past few months, the Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs have been lobbying RBC to cease funding for the Coastal GasLink pipeline.
Today, in support of those efforts, a group of supporters have chained themselves to the front doors of the bank’s downtown Winnipeg branch, essentially shutting it down.
Signs calling for RBC to pull funding for the project, and all fossil fuels projects, were taped to the building, and held by the supporters.
Statements calling the bank immoral and unethical were also painted over the windows of the building.
To date, 20 elected councils along the pipeline’s route have signed agreements with CGL, some of which have partnered to help complete sections of the route.
However, the Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs have not given their consent, maintaining that the say over non-reserve lands falls with them, and not the elected councils.
