Spring and Summer are both very busy times for road maintenance crews and very dangerous times as well.
Worksafe BC stats showed that last year two roadside workers were killed and 31 were injured after being struck by vehicles.
Over the past 10 years, 12 workers lost their lives and 221 missed work time due to injuries.
To reduce the risk to those who keep our roads up to snuff every year, Worksafe BC has sponsored the “cone zone” safety campaign.
This is the 12th annual event, which is province-wide and reminds drivers to slow down, obey flaggers and the signage in construction zones and let the red cones determine your route of travel in these zones.
Trace Acres, the director of the road safety at work program at Worksafe, noted that every roadside worker in the Terrace – Kitimat area deserves to make it back home safe every day. and not just those who can be seen on-site operating the machines and guiding traffic.
Al Johnson, the head of prevention services at Worksafe, pointed out that roadside jobs carry the heightened risk of speeding traffic so drivers need to pay attention, slow down and give the workers a wide space to do their job.
