After determining that it is not structurally sound, the Smokehouse located next to the Riverfront Trail and north of the Fraser River Walking Bridge is going to be removed by the City of Quesnel.
This decision was made after Quesnel’s Chief Building Inspector found multiple structural issues with the building that were caused by age, the weather and multiple interior fires.
The city also had some discussions with the Lhtako Dene Nation before making this decision.
As of right now, there is no plan to build a replacement smokehouse.
However, Quesnel has partnered up with the Lhtako Dene Nation on multiple projects, such as the creation of interpretive signage and sculptures along the Fraser River, that will bring the nation’s culture back to their traditional lands.
