Canada is investing a further $8.4 million into wildfire emergency planning and response initiatives in BC, via the First Nations Emergency Services Society.
That comes in addition to $516 million in wildfire response funding already announced in the 2022 Federal Budget.
Following the third worst wildfire season in the province’s history, Natural Resources Canada believed 2022 could be another devastating year of wildfires.
So far, there have been 105 wildfires reported to the BC Wildfire Service this year, burning 3.61 square kilometres of land.
Public Safety Canada has received 14 requests for community assistance over wildfires the past two years, after receiving just 4 in the5 years prior.
