Earlier today, multiple BC ministers announced that BC will be instituting protective measures for Southern Resident Orcas on the West Coast.
The reason for this is due to these Killer Whales having major cultural significance to Indigenous Peoples and BC coastal communities so the Province is looking to do what they can to restore their population.
Some of the measures include two new seasonal slowdown areas near Swiftsure Bank, a requirement for all boats to stay 400 meters away from the Whales in south BC coastal waters, Whale watching tours not being allowed to promote tours around Orcas and expanded fishery closures being put in place in areas like the mouth of the Fraser River.
This is the 4th year in a row that new measures for protecting Killer Whales have been put in place in BC.
