A new carbon-negative hydrogen plant is being proposed for Fort Nelson through a newly formed partnership.
That partnership will see the Fort Nelson First Nation and Hydrogen Naturally Inc look in to the feasibility of the project.
While the pair are still in the very early stages of exploring the project, they predict it to come at a price tag of $1.2 billion.
An old oriented strand board and plywood plant has been proposed as the site of the plant.
Expected to produce 1 million tonnes of hydrogen over its 50 year life-span, the project would also see a projected 20 million tonnes of carbon removed from the atmosphere.
This is due to the project’s use of direct air carbon capturing and storage to create bright green hydrogen.
Bright green hydrogen is created from water and electricity, whereas blue hydrogen is made using natural gas.
In addition, the partners are exploring using the site to create other value-added forestry products such as wood pellets.
