Natural Resources Canada are meeting Vancouver today for the National Round-table on Indigenous access to capital in order to discuss Canada’s issues with natural resources and infrastructure and to try and develop Indigenous economic prosperity.
According to the First Nations Major Projects Coalition and Business Council of British Columbia, there are six major challenges that need to be addressed by Canada at this round-table.
One problem is that Canada’s economy is slowing, another is that the Indian Act is making it difficult for Indigenous Nations to participate in the economy, one other is that Canada is at risk of continuing weak levels of business, the next one is Canada’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, next up is the fact that Canada has a ways to go in reconciling with Indigenous people and another is that Canada has not yet developed a national benefits-sharing framework despite having the means to do so.
A suggested solution that may be able to solve these issues is for Canada to build a national Indigenous access to the capital program.
