Starting next month, the results of one of the most extensive consultations that has ever been done by the province will be used to inform BC’s first ever anti-racism data legislation.
Over 13,000 residents took part in the consultation, whose goal is to determine how the government can deal with systemic racism and make BC more inclusive.
This consultation took place from September 2021 to January 31st 2022 and people shared their points of view through three outlets, community-led engagement sessions, online engagements and talks with Indigenous leadership and communities.
More than 90 percent of the people taking part in the community engagements believed that collecting this data will help rebuild the trust between the government and Indigenous peoples and racialized communities.
This legislation, which will be introduced in a few weeks, is intended to address the challenges that people of color in BC have had to face over the years and then get rid of them.
The province also announced that they will keep working with all people of color to refine the legislation and eliminate all discrimination in the future.
