Pope Francis has issued an apology for the Catholic Church’s role in the Canadian residential school system.
During a public audience this morning, the Pope asked for forgiveness for what he called deplorable conduct from members of the Church.
He spoke of feelings of sorrow and shame, and called the efforts of church members to rob people of their cultural identity “chilling”, and acknowledged the intergenerational trauma that resulted.
It came during the last day of meetings with a delegation made up of nearly 200 Indigenous leaders, residential school survivors, and more.
While delegates acknowledged the apology as a historic first step, it is just that: one step in a long path to reconciliation.
The next step, for many, is an apology on Canadian soil, one which it seems like the Pope is on a course to make.
As part of his speech, the Pope reiterated his intent to visit Canada in the coming year.
While no date was finalized, he says he hopes to visit in the days around the Feast of St Anne’s, in late July.
