A new heritage strategy released by the Tŝilhqot’in National Government includes a call for the province to overhaul the Heritage Conservation Act.
That strategy outlines the importance of ancestral spaces, structures, and belongings, as well as place names, stories, songs, and teachings to Tŝilhqot’in heritage.
In taking a holistic approach to heritage, the plan recognizes the close relation between physical spaces and objects, and spiritual and mental well-being.
But they also say that BC’s current Heritage Conservation Act has failed in to address the needs of the Tŝilhqot’in people.
They are calling for the province to create a more responsive and inclusive version of the act, which prevents the destruction and desecration of Tŝilhqot’in cultural and physical history.
