BC’s First Nations Leadership Council is condemning the on-going “Freedom Rally” convoy, and related protests in Ottawa.
In a letter released yesterday, the Council blasted the rally for spreading misinformation on Covid-19, driving division, perpetuating violence, and racial appropriation.
They also backed the Algonquin Nation, who have called the protests on their traditional territory unacceptable.
In that same statement, the Algonquin revealed that they did not support or facilitate a teepee, pipe ceremony, and sacred fire set up by protesters in Confederation Park.
In their letter, the Leadership Council also called out a double standard in policing, noting that the response would have been stronger had the protesters been Indigenous.
They are calling for a stronger response from law enforcement, and leaders at all levels to denounce and cease support for the convoy.
