A worker accommodation facility in Kitimat which has been closed for some time is attempting to re-open.
In 2013, permission was granted to open the Crossroads Lodge, just off Highway 37, near the intersection with Nalabila Boulevard.
But, that permission was contingent on a hotel being operated on the lot no later than December of 2017.
Two subsequent extensions to that timeline were granted by Council.
However, despite foundation work having been completed for the hotel, due to not operators taking an interest in the project.
While the Lodge has not been in operation for some time, the new owners, Dexterra, are proposing its reopening, with some covenant modifications.
Those modifications would see the hotel requirement eliminated, and replaced with the requirement to build a commercial building on the site.
In addition, the modified covenant will require the proponent to undertake sidewalk improvements, landscaping, walkway and stair construction, and more.
A number of deadlines are set out in the proposed covenant for those projects, with a final completion deadline of December, 2023.
Yesterday, Council gave first, second, and third readings to a related housing agreement, but a public hearing will decide the 736-bed project’s ultimate fate.
No date has been provided as of yet for that hearing.
