A proposed mine northeast of Smithers has once again been denied an environmental assessment certificate.
Pacific Booker Minerals first applied for a certificate for their proposed gold, copper, and molybdenum mine near Morrison Lake in 2010.
That initial application was refused in 2012, but the Supreme Court set the decision aside to allow PBM opportunity to review and comment on EAO recommendations.
Ministers had determined that the project posed a threat to sockeye salmon populations which contribute to the Skeena River sockeye.
They also identified the potential for long-term liability for the province, and an unacceptable risk to long-term water quality in Morrison Lake.
Between 2016 and 2021, PBM submitted three supplemental application drafts, none of which met requirements.
In order to address the lack of progress, the EAO engaged with PBM, and the Lake Babine, Gitxsan, Gitanyow, and Yekooche First Nations.
In December of last year, the further assessment order was rescinded, and now, Environment Minister George Heyman has decided against issuing the certificate.
