After a one and a half year vacancy, the BC Liberal Party finally has a new leader.
Kevin Falcon took the title after receiving 52 percent of the points in this weekend’s vote.
Skeena MLA Ellis Ross finished second with 34 percent of the vote, which wrapped up after the fifth ballot on Saturday night.
Today, Falcon appointed Ross as energy critic.
Falcon, a former cabinet minister, has not held a seat in legislature since 2013, after opting to spend time with his family, rather than run for re-election.
He previously lost the 2011 Leadership race to former Premier Christy Clark.
The BC Liberals had been without a leader since Andrew Wilkinson resigned in October of 2020, with Shirley Bond filling an as interim leader in the meantime.
Wilkinson announced today he would be stepping down from his MLA spot in Vancouver to open a seat for Falcon.
A by-election must still be declared by Premier John Horgan for Falcon to run in the riding and win the seat.
Bond will remain in her role as leader of the opposition in legislature, to allow Falcon to tour the province and meet with voters.
