Gidimt’en Land Defenders are citing on-going human rights violations by Canada and BC in a submission made to the United Nations.
Titled “Militarization of Wet’suwet’en Lands and Canada’s Ongoing Violations”, the submission was sent to the Human Rights Council’s Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous People.
Submitted by Hereditary Chief Dinï ze’ Woos, Gidimt’en Checkpoint Spokesperson Sleydo’, and Media Coordinator Jen Wickham, the action is supported by more than 20 organizations.
In the submission, they cite a number of actions that are in contravention to their stated commitment to reconciliation.
Those include: irreparable harm to the land caused by industry, militarization of RCMP to forcibly remove land defenders, and legal tactics used to violate their rights.
The submission comes as Coastal GasLink begins to restart prep-work for their plans to drill under the Wedzin Kwa.
Tensions erupted last year, ultimately leading to RCMP enforcement, when land defenders last attempted to block the activities.
