School District 57 has a new leader, and she says she is committed to addressing systemic Indigenous racism in the district.
Cindy Heitman was appointed as the new Superintendent of the Prince George School District last week.
Last June, a special advisors report was issued which brought forward evidence of systemic racism against Indigenous students and staff.
In September of the same year, the Board lost both its Chair and Vice-Chair, as they stepped down, citing racial discrimination as a reason.
Now, Heitman says she will use the recommendations brought forward in that report to address the issues in the system.
She says that many of the issues First Nations students experience in the system stem from the use of the colonial education system, which has caused so much trauma.
Heitman says that one way to help is to establish multiple paths to graduation, be they college, university, trades, arts, or vocational training routes.
