No humans were harmed in a fire that sparked in a two-unit home in Prince Rupert on Monday, but unfortunately, pets were.
Just before 3:00 in the afternoon, a resident called 9-1-1, saying she noticed smoke coming from her unit while shovelling.
Once on scene, fire crews were able to contain the fire to the living room.
However, they could not prevent the smoke damage from spreading throughout much of the ground unit, and some of the upper unit.
There was no structural damage, and no human residents were harmed, though crews did find cats inside which could not be resuscitated by paramedics.
The fire department is reminding residents during these cold times not to overload sockets, and to ensure space heaters are plugged directly in to them, not an extension cord.
They also say that closing all interior doors while asleep or away significantly reduces the risk of smoke damage spreading.
