Sunday marked two years since BC became the first province to officially adapt the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in to law.
But, the First Nations Leadership Council says the momentum created by that historic process has not brought about the change expected.
UBCIC Grand Chief Stewart Phillip says that recent government decisions, such as Bill 22, or the Old Growth Logging Deferrals, prove that little has changed.
He says the province continues to unilaterally develop policy and legislation, and asking for First Nations input afterwards as a cover.
Regional Chief for the Assembly of First Nations, Terry Teegee, acknowledges that government takes time, but says their response to Covid and the fire and flooding emergencies show they can move quickly when determined.
He also notes that the disproportionate impacts those crises on Indigenous Peoples show that the systemic issues still remain.
