Already one of the most renowned Haida artists alive, Chief James Hart is set to add another accolade to his collection.
Hart has been announced as this year’s recipient of the Audain Prize for Visual Arts, an honour which recognizes the most distinguished Canadian artists.
A Hereditary Chief of the Eagle Clan, Hart has been carving since 1976, and his work has since evolved to feature numerous technologies and materials.
Crafted by Hart, red cedar The Dance Screen in the Audain Art Museum in Whistler is the only free-standing dance screen in the world.
He also crafted the Reconciliation Pole, which tells the story of Indigenous Canadians before, during, and after the Residential School system, and was raised at UBC in 2017.
Along with the honour of the award itself, Chief Hart will receive a 100 thousand dollar prize.
