A recent report from the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business found businesses owned by Indigenous women faced significant barriers when compared to their male counterparts during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The report was put together alongside Science and Economic Development Canada, and used data from the Council’s COVID-19 Indigenous Business Survey.
According to the data, 47 percent of businesses owned by Indigenous women reported having no current lending relationships with financial institutions.
That is compared to just 30 percent of male-owned businesses.
Furthermore, 49 percent say that financial requirements were a barrier to accessing government support, and 31 percent faced difficulties during the application process.
The report also found that First Nation’s businesses are 11 percent more likely than Métis owned businesses to report no on-going relationships with financial institutions.
