Fresh funding from the Department of Canadian Heritage has relieved concerns over the continuation of language revitalization programs in BC.
Earlier in the year, BC announced that they would not be continuing funding for Indigenous Language Revitalization programs.
Over the previous three years, the province had provided an estimated 50 million dollars in funding.
That lack of funding had the First Peoples’ Cultural Council concerned over their ability to continue to fund programs in BC.
However, a 6.86 million dollar investment announced by the Department of Canadian Heritage has now come through to help bridge that gap.
In total, that brings the department’s annual investment to just under 15 million dollars.
Funding will go towards the preservation and revitalization of more than 30 Indigenous languages in BC.
