Larger and more frequent storms have been hitting the North Pacific as of late, and experts are pinning the worsening conditions on climate change.
According to the Centre for Responsible Marine Shipping in Canada, since 2018 more than 1,300 shipping containers are lost annually.
Close to 3,000 were lost between November of 2020 and April of 2021 alone.
The Centre says that shipping containers are secured to each other and to the hull of ships, meaning it takes incredibly rough conditions for them to come loose.
According to data from an incident near Vancouver Island this weekend which saw 109 containers go overboard, the ship was listing 35 degrees during heavy weather, causing the containers to come loose.
First Nations have been advocating Canada for a Marine Safety Centre, but have reportedly been unable to acquire an adequate proposal from Canada.
