Quesnel Mayor Bob Simpson has responded to public complaints over how long it’s taking to repair Johnston Bridge.
According to the Mayor, the issues boil down to money and priorities.
City staff has pegged the repair cost for the bridge at 7 million dollars.
Simpson says that large-scale, high cost, projects like this are difficult for municipalities to push through quickly, as a public referendum is required to spend any money not covered by grant funding.
Additionally, Council has to consider priority projects such as the landfill and firehall, which will all require large funding and time commitments in the coming years.
There is also an alternate route via Maple Drive, which Council is improving the safety of while they explore options for the bridge repairs.
Significant structural issues prompted weight restrictions on Johnston Bridge, and Council is currently awaiting an expert report.
